‘Lady G’: Conservatives Are Demanding Coverage Of A Gay Rumor About Lindsey Graham

Right-wing media outlets and pundits are furious that a White House official made an opaque reference on Twitter to persistent rumors that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is in the closet and are demanding that media outlets cover the old tweet.

Before working as press secretary for the Biden administration, Jen Psaki tweeted about Senator Lindsey Graham, where she referred to him as “Lady G,” the popular nickname for the Republican used by many DC insiders. The nickname trended on Twitter last year when a gay adult film star made allegations about Graham on social media and claimed “Lady G” was his nickname among male sex workers.

“Every sex worker I know has been hired by this man,” gay adult film star Sean Harding tweeted last year. Those rumors were never substantiated.

“Only in 2020 does #LadyG get to push a bunch of debunked conspiracy theories while questioning @SallyQYates (aka an American hero),” Psaki tweet at the time, referencing the trending hashtag.

As the Advocate notes: “Jokes about Graham’s sexuality are fairly common in Washington, especially among the LGBTQ+ community. Some find them funny and say it’s appropriate to mock a man who has done so much to hurt LGBTQ+ Americans, while others consider the jokes homophobic.”

Graham, who has long been one of the most anti-LGBTQ+ members of Congress, has dodged rumors that he’s secretly gay for decades. “To the extent that it matters, I’m not gay,” he said in 2018 when the media’s attention was again drawn to the gay rumors.

Some conservatives are now outraged about Psaki’s tweet and are demanding the media cover it.

“Because he’s a Republican, CNN and MSNBC won’t raise hell over this,” Newsbusters editor Curtis Houck tweeted. “Therefore, they’re okay with actual transphobia.”

Houck appears to have misunderstood the context of the nickname “Lady G” – the rumor isn’t that Graham insisted male sex workers call him “Lady G” because he’s a trans woman, but because he’s a gay man.

Major right-wing websites like Fox News, The Daily Mail, and The Daily Caller are also calling for other outlets and reporters to pay more attention to Psaki’s #LadyG tweet.

Trump’s former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell said it should be “widely condemned.”

Spectator USA editor Amber Athey said that the “Lady G” comment needs to be discussed at a White House press briefing.
