A 31-year-old man was arrested on Sunday after Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said he admitted that he had threatened to “shoot up” a local Walmart, reports WTSP.
Deputies responded to the Walmart just before 1:30 p.m. after Wayne Lee Padgett called and said he was going to “shoot up” the store in Gibsonton, Florida, which is located south of East Tampa.
Chronister said the man told them he was “intrigued” by the shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, this weekend that left 29 dead and more than 50 people injured.
Deputies said they evacuated the building out of an abundance of caution.
Hours later, police traced the call to Padgett.
Chronister said Padgett’s mother worked at that Walmart.
Padgett has been charged with a felony count of false report of using a firearm in a violent manner.
You may see our deputies near the Walmart in Gibsonton. There is NO ACTIVE Threat. Everyone is safe. We are conducting an investigation in the area. #SheriffChadChronister #teamhcso
