Newly elected Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi quoted former President Ronald Reagan during her acceptance speech before the House of Representatives on Thursday.
Pelosi quoted from the 40th president’s last speech as leader of the country when she spoke about protecting DREAMers under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
“He said, ‘If we ever close the door to new Americans, our leadership role in the world will soon be lost’ — Ronald Reagan,” Pelosi said.
“Our common cause is to find and forge a way forward for our country. Let us stand for the people to promote liberty and justice for all as we pledge every day. And always, always keep our nation safe from threats old and new, from terrorism and cyber warfare overseas and here at home to protect and defend.”
She then called out GOP lawmakers for not joining Democrats in applauding the sentiment, “You don’t applaud for Ronald Reagan?”
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Pelosi’s savageness:
Nancy Pelosi quoted Ronald Reagan on immigration, and a bunch of House Republicans failed to applaud. The GOP is now such a far-right freak show, they think Reagan was too liberal.
