Lady Gaga On Trump Erasing Transgender People: He Is ‘Driven By Ignorance’ On Gender Policy

Lady Gaga ripped into President Donald Trump after reports surfaced on Monday that his administration is weighing significantly narrowing the definition of gender that would require individuals to identify either as male or female based on their genitalia at birth, a move that could roll back protections for transgender Americans.

In a series of tweets Monday night, the pop star said the Trump administration is “living in an alternate universe” and “being driven by ignorance.”

“The government may be living in an alternate universe, but we as a society & culture know who we are and know our truth and must stick together and raise our voices so we can educate them about gender identities,” Gaga tweeted.

She continued: “While today you might feel unheard or unseen, know that this is not the reality of humanity. This is another display of leadership being driven by ignorance.#TransRightsAreHumanRights #WontBeErased.”

In a proposition that may affect federal recognition of transgendered individuals in the U.S., the Trump administration attempts to establish a legal definition of sex under Title IX; a federal civil rights law that protects against gender discrimination in educational programs that receive financial assistance from the government.

“Sex means a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth,” the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proposed in the memo, according to The New York Times. “The sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence.”
