Step Aside Santa, A Popular Australian Shopping District Is Ditching Mr. Claus For A Drag Queen

Looking to travel someplace warm and queer-friendly for the holiday season?

How about a large, English-speaking city where drag queens rule? Then you should think about getting your butt to Melbourne, Australia right now, where they’re replacing Santa Claus with Mrs. Drag Claus.

The Chapel Street shopping district in Melbourne, one of the most popular in the country, has dropped Santa Claus from its Christmas parade in favor of drag queens, hoping to boost cheer and business as the holidays approach.

“Chapel Street does not do boring. It’s bold and full of color,” said Chrissie Maus, director of the Chapel Street Shopping Precinct Association. “No one is more experienced at getting a party started than a drag queen, that’s why we’ve recruited three of Melbourne’s finest.”

Several drag queens will line Chapel Street. They’ll be riding in style in a BMW convertible, lip syncing Kylie Minogue and Mariah Carey. I’m talking everyday until Christmas Eve.

The Daily Mail Australia has already reported that this move is “infuriating Christians and traditionalists.”

“Change may not be comfortable… But it’s necessary,” drag queen Art Simone told the paper. “And let me tell you I wear some things to change me that are not comfortable but are ABSOLUTELY necessary!”

“I adore Chapel Street and I’m glad I can help spread some Christmas Cheer the new Chapel Street style!”
