LGBT people and allies who still somehow believe Donald Trump is a viable choice for president: the country’s leading anti-LGBT activist has just confirmed the Republican presidential candidate has embraced his policy agenda.
Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, an organization labeled an anti-LGBT hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, has bragged that the Trump campaign has been the friendliest to his agenda in years.
Perkins, who has compared gays to paedophiles and insisted that gays will attempt a ‘Christian Holocaust’, claimed Trump has embraced it far more than any Republican nominee who’s come before.
“I’ve had to fight every Republican campaign, including George W. Bush’s campaign, John McCain’s, Mitt Romney’s, on the platform over life issues, marriage issues, human sexuality,” he said during an open conference call for Christian groups, which was monitored by Right Wing Watch.
“I’ve had to fight every campaign except Donald Trump’s campaign. They actually worked with us on the platform, in fact whipped, meaning gathered votes, on one of my amendments [to the Republican platform].”
And then there’s this scary piece of information:
“There has never been a clearer contrast between the two parties when we look at the party platforms. I wrote a large portion of the platform, it is the most conservative, Biblically-aligned platform, in clear contrast with what the Democratic Party stands for.”
To remind you, in an attempt to gather more support from evangelicals, Trump adopted many policy platforms in their entirety. He’s pledged to sign the “First Amendment Defence Act” (which would permit religious anti-LGBT discrimination), promised he’d consider appointing conservative Supreme Court justices so as to repeal equal marriage, and he’s come out in support of North Carolina’s anti-trans law, HB 2. His running mate, Mike Pence, has also confirmed the two will do away with Barack Obama’s protections for the LGBT community.
Passed earlier this year, the Republican Platform included some of the most anti-LGBT provisions we’ve seen in years.
