Over the weekend, a photographer captured the incredible moment a 12-year-old boy stood up to thousands of members of Mexico’s “pro-family” hate group Frente Nacional por la Familia who were protesting President Peña Nieto’s proposal change the country’s constitution to allow same-sex marriage nationally.
Photojournalist Manuel Rodríguez captured the stunning image of a 12-year-old boy making his stand with arms outstretched in front of a sprawling mass of demonstrators, in the city of Celaya, Guanajuato.
“At first I thought the child was only playing,” Rodríguez told Regeneracion.
After the child was safely removed from the road, the photographer later discovered that the young boy had a very personal reason for confronting the angry demonstrators.
“I have an uncle who is gay,” the child said in an interview with Rodríguez. “I hate that they hate him.”
Same-sex marriage is currently permitted in Mexico City as well as 10 of the country’s 31 states, including Coahuila, Quintana Roo, Jalisco, Nayarit, Chihuahua and Sonora.
