Two San Diego Trump Delegates Say Gays Prey On Infants, Homosexuality Is A Curable Disease

Two of Donald Trump’s delegates from San Diego run a political organization that not only claims that homosexuality results from childhood sexual abuse by gays but also claims that there are therapeutic treatments for gay people that “can cure” their homosexuality, reports the San Diego Tribune.

The unethical and dangerous practice of “conversion therapy” has been widely discredited by every major medical association in the United States and has also been banned in California and four other states.

John and Donna Woodrum, the husband and wife team who run the Eagle Forum San Diego, claim on their website that “children can be attacked by sexual predators when they’re still in diapers in their cribs. The sexual act is so powerful, when committed often enough and charged with enough psychological energy, it could alter a growing chlld’s sexual identity.”

The Woodrum’s aren’t the only ones who hold these controversial views.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump’s vice presidential pick, said during his run for Congress in 2000 that government “resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.”

Last week, we reported that the GOP’s new party platform for the national convention also supports conversion therapy.

The Log Cabin Republicans called the GOP’s platform the “most anti-LGBT platform in the Party’s 162-year history.”

The San Diego Tribune adds:

The Woodrums’ website for the San Diego chapter of the Eagle Forum espouses what are widely regarded as extreme theories.

“Where does homosexuality come from? Early childhood sexual abuse,” the website states.

“Children can be attacked by sexual predators when they’re still in diapers in their cribs,” it continues. “The sexual act is so powerful, when committed often enough and charged with enough psychological energy, it could alter a growing child’s sexual identity.”

The website contends that identity can be changed. “Homosexuality is a disorder that can be cured — prior to 1973 every psychiatrist in the US knew this,” it says.

Conversion therapy consists of programs that attempt to change the sexual orientation of gay people. The therapy has been widely discredited by the mainstream medical community and homosexuality is not recognized by mental health professionals as a disorder.

In an interview Thursday, John Woodrum wouldn’t fully vouch for the effectiveness of the therapy.

“From what I’ve heard and what I’ve read, it seems to be one of those things that in some cases it (isn’t effective),” he said.

He said the San Diego chapter of the Eagle Forum is a small but active group that meets monthly.

“It’s unfortunate that they would be delegates to the Republican National Convention, but that’s what we’ve come to expect,” said Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, president of San Diego Democrats for Equality. “It’s not surprising when you have Trump at the top of the ticket.”

Abbe Land, the Executive Director and CEO of The Trevor Project, condemned the GOP’s anti-gay platform embracing conversion therapy in an op-ed for The Advocate:

As the executive director and CEO of the Trevor Project, the only national accredited suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ people under 24, we hear from young people daily about being rejected in their homes and being forced to conform to identities that are not authentic to them. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people in the United States between the ages of 13 to 24, and LGB youth are three to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers, with nearly half of transgender youth who have seriously thought about taking their own lives. LGBTQ youth who come from highly rejecting families are eight times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers. Attempting to force LGBTQ youth to change their sexual orientation or gender identity through conversion therapy activities is the equivalent of physical and psychological torture and has been proven to put their mental health at risk.

Including conversion therapy support in political party platforms makes it a priority to exterminate LGBTQ identities and disregards official stances of the American Psychological Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, National Association of Social Workers, and many more mental health professionals. It sends a message to all that being LGBTQ is wrong. Any endorsement of conversion therapy impairs the acceptance process by encouraging families and communities to consider it as a viable option. Young people who may internalize this homophobia can experience increased depression, shame, decreased self-esteem, social withdrawal, substance abuse, risky behavior, and suicidal ideation. We must protect LGBTQ youth from external factors that will affect their well-being.
