Britney Spears, RuPaul, Pink, And More, Join Forces For New Orlando Benefit Single “Hands”

An all-star panel of 24 artists, including Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Jason Derulo, RuPaul, Gwen Stefani, Mary J. Blige and Pink, have teamed up for to record a single that will raise money for the shooting victims and their families.

The megatrack “Hands” was written by out singer-songwriter Justin Tranter, co-writer of Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and has written songs for DNCE, Fall Out Boy and Stefani.

“Like the rest of the world I woke up to the news that morning and was horrified and sad and scared,” Tranter told Billboard.

Tranter was on tour in Miami with Gomez, when he heard the heartbreaking news of the Pulse nightclub massacre that killed 49 and injured 53.

Tranter, an LGBT advocate since coming out at the age of 14, left Miami and headed for Center Orlando, the city’s chief LGBT community center, to volunteer.

“I called them and said, ‘If I fly up, is there something for me to help with?’” he told Billboard. “They say, ‘We need as many hands as we can possibly get.’”

“Hands” was created the following day.

“We didn’t want to have any trendy electronic elements,” Tranter told Billboard. “We wanted it to sound classic, timeless and human. We want this anthem of positivity to be played for years to come.”

The artists all recorded their segments separately from wherever they happened to be at that moment.

“We assigned everybody what we thought would be the best part for their voice,” Tranter says, “And we asked them all to sing an additional part, just in case. But everybody got it done in time so we ended up with extra vocals.”

Spears opens the track with the line “Can hold a gun or a hold a heart,”

Proceeds from “Hands” benefit Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund, the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida and GLAAD.
