A young gay Georgia couple were brutally attacked in their sleep after a 48-year-old man entered their College Park apartment, south of Atlanta, and poured scalding hot water on them.
At around 7 AM, while boyfriends Marquez Talbert and Anthony Gooden were sleeping, Martin Luther Blackwell – who was dating Mr Gooden’s mother – poured boiling water over the pair causing third-degree burns to their backs, necks, arms and legs.
“Martin pulled me up and said, ‘Get out of my house with all that gay,'” Tolbert said. “I couldn’t stop screaming.” Even though he said he wouldn’t put up with the couple in his house, Blackwell did not live in that apartment. It belonged to Gooden and his mother, but Blackwell was frequently visiting.”
According to a police report obtained by WSBTV, Blackwell said he was disgusted by the couple’s relationship, telling police, “They’ll be all right. It was just a little hot water on them.”
Blackwell was booked into the Fulton County Jail where he remains. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and prosecutors are looking into federal hate crime laws. (Georgia does not have any such laws on their books.)
“The pain doesn’t let you sleep. It’s just, like, it’s excruciating, 24 hours a day, and it doesn’t go anywhere,” Marquez Tolbert said. “It doesn’t dial down, anything. It’s just there.”
“I can barely think straight because the burning, the stinging is everywhere,” he added tearfully.

The incident, which occurred just before Valentine’s Day induced Gooden into a 10-day coma. A friend of Talbert’s mother has set up an GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of the hospital bills. To learn more or to make a contribution, click here.
