Ellen DeGeneres Tells Oprah: “I Didn’t Ever Think I Was Going To Come Out”

Popular talk show host and lesbian icon Ellen DeGeneres, who came out to Oprah Winfrey twice on TV in 1997, rejoined Winfrey to discuss her decision to come out and how she thought it was one she never thought she’d make.

On Oprah’s Master Class series, Ellen admits: “I certainly didn’t ever that I was going to come out,” she says. “Period. And I didn’t think I’d be coming out on a show, ever.”

The talk show host recalls attending a “hippy course” called “Inner Dialogue of Your Subconscious Mind” at the Esalen Institute near Big Sur, California. “I wanted to know what the inner dialogue of my subconscious mind was, and it was scary and crazy,” she said. “What came out of listening to what I had been saying to myself is, ‘Would I still be famous? Would they still love me if they knew I was gay?’ And my fear was, ‘No, they wouldn’t.'”
