Openly Gay Boston PD Officer Makes The Cover Of Sports Illustrated In Iconic Boston Marathon Bombing Photo

The cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated features a powerful image of three Boston police officers and a fallen runner moments after the first bomb exploded at the Boston Marathon on Monday.

It’s hard to imagine how anyone would react to a terrorist bombing at a world-famous sporting event, but the natural instincts of the Boston Police Officers at the marathon were to run toward the bombing site knowing that another bomb could go off at any moment.

According to Boston Pride, one of the police officers appearing in the iconic photo taken by The Boston Globe‘s John Tlumacki, is openly gay and is the Boston Police Department’s liaison to the LGBT community.

That officer is Javier Pagan (far right) and he was one of many police officers on duty Monday patrolling the finish line where the first bomb went off.

The Dallas Voice also reports that Officer Pagan came out at age 26 just one year after joining the BPD. He is married to his husband Pedro who is a retired NYPD sergeant who also helped rescue victims from the World Trade Center following the September 11th attacks.
